Our story
One Table, Two Doors
The Shared Foundation began with a simple observation at a family dinner table: when a person gives ten dollars to help feed someone, the ten dollars rarely arrives whole. It passes through layer after layer — offices, processors, programs — and by the time it reaches the end, there is not much left. The giver meant to buy a meal. What they bought was a fraction of one.
So we asked a different question: what if the gift never shrank?
We all share the same table. The Shared Foundation is the giving side of a small family of neighborhood businesses in Alameda, California. Its flagship program is Give a Meal, and it runs on the rails of Hello Yellow — a local food app built to find the dish you're craving, from the restaurants on your own street.
Here is how a meal travels:
A giver gives once. Ten dollars, twenty — the amount they pick is the whole gift. It goes into a shared pool, and the pool is never skimmed. Every donated dollar becomes food. Not most of it. All of it.
A restaurant cooks. When a neighbor needs a meal, a local restaurant in the program prepares it — real food, from a real kitchen, blocks from where they live. The restaurant is paid for the meal in full, the same as any order. Feeding a neighbor is not a discount or a handout bin; it is a sale, with dignity on both sides of the counter.
A trusted hand carries it. Meals reach people through the neighborhood's own trusted businesses and known faces — never strangers, never a knock from someone unaccountable. And no giver ever forms a direct line to a specific person in need. Gifts are pooled on purpose, so generosity stays generous and privacy stays private.
Why a food app and a foundation, together? Because hunger is local, and so is the fix. Hello Yellow already knows the kitchens — which ones are open, what they cook, who stands behind the counter. The Shared Foundation holds the giving. One knows the food; the other guards the gift. Two doors, opening onto the same table.
The first meals in the pool were placed there by the family behind Hello Yellow itself — because a promise like this should start at home.
This is a small beginning, in one neighborhood, and we intend to keep it honest: the foundation is still being formed, gifts are not tax-deductible yet, and every meal we count will be a meal that actually happened.
Please help us help others. We can change our community — one meal at a time.
